Passing Google Play’s Designed for Families Policy & Children’s Privacy Audit

Google Play’s Families Policy ensures that apps accessible to children under 13 provide age-appropriate content, comply with COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act) and GDPR-K, and enforce strict advertising safety.

The 4 Essential Rules for Families Compliance

  • Certified Ad SDKs Only: You may only display ads served by Google Play Certified Families Ad SDK networks (e.g. Google Mobile Ads SDK initialized in child-directed treatment mode).
  • No Personalized Advertising: Transmitting the Google Advertising Identifier (AAID) for behavioral targeting or remarketing to children is strictly prohibited.
  • Neutral Age Screen: If your app targets mixed audiences (both children and adults), you must implement a neutral age gate that does not encourage users to falsify their age.
  • Privacy Policy Disclosures: Your privacy policy must explicitly disclose children’s data handling, parental consent mechanisms, and deletion rights.

Configuring App Content in Play Console

Under Play Console > Policy & Programs > App Content > Target Audience and Content, select all relevant age brackets honestly. If any bracket includes ages under 13, complete the mandatory Families Policy questionnaire.
