Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Custom URI Schemes and Android App Links?
Custom URI schemes (e.g., myapp://profile) can be claimed by any installed app, which prompts an "Open with" app chooser dialog. Android App Links (https://example.com/profile) are verified against your website’s assetlinks.json file on Android 6.0+, allowing your app to open seamlessly without user prompts.
Why does my deep link open in Chrome instead of my app on Android 12+?
Starting in Android 12, Google requires App Links domain verification via Digital Asset Links (.well-known/assetlinks.json) with autoVerify="true". If verification fails, Android opens web links in the browser by default. Check status via: adb shell pm get-app-links <package_name>.
How do I test deep links on an Android emulator or connected device via ADB?
Run: adb shell am start -W -a android.intent.action.VIEW -d "<your_url>" <package_name>. The -W flag waits for the launch to complete and outputs detailed resolution logs.
How can non-technical QA testers test deep links on their physical phones?
Scan the live QR code generated on this page directly using the Android camera app or Google Lens. If your app is installed with matching intent filters, the app opens immediately.
