1. Select Restricted Permission

Critical Policy Rule: The permission must be essential to the primary user-facing purpose of the app. Secondary or optional features will be rejected.

Q1: What is the core functionality that requires All Files Access?

MyAwesomeApp is fundamentally designed as a automated cloud backup and local file indexing. The app’s primary purpose requires indexing, organizing, and batch-managing non-media files across all external storage volumes. Without broad access, users cannot browse, search, or restore files across different directories.

Q2: Why can’t you use the Storage Access Framework (SAF) or Photo Picker?

The Storage Access Framework (SAF) imposes severe performance bottlenecks when recursively scanning thousands of user files and requires separate user approval for every individual folder, which destroys usability for a comprehensive file manager. Furthermore, the MediaStore API only supports photos, audio, and video, while our app manages documents, archives, code files, and full system backup sets.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Google Play require a YouTube video link for sensitive permissions?
Google Play reviewers cannot always set up complex environments (such as specific server accounts or hardware peripherals). A 30–60 second unlisted YouTube video allows reviewers to quickly verify that the permission is directly triggered by an in-app user action and serves an essential core purpose.
Should the demonstration YouTube video be set to Public, Unlisted, or Private?
The video MUST be set to "Unlisted". If it is set to "Private", Google Play automated and human reviewers will not have permission to view it, resulting in an immediate rejection with the reason: "Video link is inaccessible or private".
Can I record the video using an Android Studio emulator?
While emulator recordings are technically accepted, physical device recordings with visible finger taps (or "Show taps" enabled in Developer Options) have a significantly higher approval rate because they prove the app is production-ready on real hardware.
What if my app only needs photos for profile avatars or chat attachments?
Do not request READ_MEDIA_IMAGES. Google Play will reject it 100% of the time. You must use the Android Photo Picker (ActivityResultContracts.PickVisualMedia), which requires zero permission declarations.
