The one graphic you cannot publish without

Google Play requires a 1024 × 500 feature graphic for every app. It sits at the top of your store listing, and it is the image Play uses when your app appears in curated collections. Unlike screenshots, there is no way to skip it.

Design rules that matter

  • No alpha channel. Export flattened; transparency causes an upload rejection.
  • Keep text in the middle 80%. The graphic is cropped differently across devices and surfaces.
  • Avoid dead centre. If you add a promo video, Play overlays a play button there.
  • No store badges or fake awards. "Editor’s Choice" imagery, invented ratings and misleading claims are grounds for listing rejection.
  • One idea only. At listing size the graphic is small — a logo and four or five words beat a paragraph.

What to write on it

The headline should state the benefit, not the category. “Track every rupee” works; “Budgeting application” does not. The subtitle is where the category and the qualifier go — offline, free, no ads, whatever your actual differentiator is.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a Google Play feature graphic?
Exactly 1024 × 500 pixels, PNG or JPEG, with no alpha transparency. This tool always exports at those dimensions.
Is the feature graphic mandatory?
Yes. You cannot publish an app on Google Play without one. It appears at the top of your store listing and in several promotional surfaces.
Why should I keep text away from the edges?
Play crops and overlays the graphic differently across surfaces, and if you add a promo video a play button is overlaid in the centre. Keeping key text within the middle 80% and off dead centre keeps it readable everywhere.
Can I use my app screenshots in it?
You can, but Google discourages graphics that are mostly screenshots or that contain misleading claims, badges like "Editor’s Choice", or fake ratings. A clean logo plus a short benefit line performs best.
